Stainless steel materials are used in various applications because of their improved corrosion resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, or power.
Stainless steel special features are derived by adding alloying elements, principally nickel and chromium.
Typically, more than ten percent chromium is needed to generate stainless steel.
Austenitic Stainless Steel
The three-hundred series of usually austenitic stainless steels. These stainless steels are used in applications needing corrosion toughness and resistance.
The three-hundred series stainless steels can be found in various applications in the transportation, petroleum, and power generation industries.
These stainless steels are mainly helpful in a top-temperature atmosphere.
This stainless steel series is perfect for both pulsed and continuous-wave laser welding.
Ferritic Stainless Steel
The ferritic four-hundred series of stainless steel is generally very little to no nickel and does not possess the best weldability when matched to the austenitic grade.
Laser welding the ferritic stainless steel grades, in some cases, impairs joint corrosion and toughness resistance.
The reduction in toughness is mainly due to coarse grains in the heat-affected area and martensite formation, which happens in the higher carbon content grades.

Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steel is a combination of austenitic-ferritic stainless steel.
These stainless steels are featured by a two-phase microstructure containing ferrite and aesthete.
Generally, the volumetric fractions of ferrite and austenite are about equal. The key alloying elements are nickel, chromium, and molybdenum.
Duplex stainless steels are generally also alloyed with minor amounts of nitrogen. Duplex stuff is generally weldable with the best outcomes.
Because of the range of materials accessible before finalizing a design.
Martensitic Stainless Steels
The martensitic four-hundred series of stainless steel is more challenging to laser weld than the ferritic and austenitic grades.
